Race Talk: Mosheen v Manawanui

Comment | Author: glenn watson  |  Mar 12, 2012

SUPER filly Mosheen will chase a third classic win this season as early as Saturday when she takes on the likes of Manawanui in the group 1 Randwick Guineas.

The filly's trainer Robert Smerdon said it had been decided that the VRC Oaks and Australian Guineas winner should stick to her own age for her next two assignments in Sydney rather than take on older mares the following week in the group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill.

''We thought about the options we had and we opted to stay with three-year-olds in the Randwick Guineas before tackling the [group 1] Vinery [Stud] Stakes for fillies over 2000 metres on Golden Slipper day,'' Smerdon said.

''From there, nothing has been locked in. The [AJC] Oaks will be considered as will a race like the Doncaster [Handicap]. You've got plenty of options when dealing with a filly like her.''

Mosheen, who was also runner-up in another classic, the Thousand Guineas, last spring, has started just once in Sydney nearly 12 months ago and it was in that race - the Golden Slipper Stakes - that she first came to prominence when a surprise runner-up to Sepoy at odds of $101.

Just to make sure the reverse way of going will present no problems for the versatile filly, Smerdon galloped Mosheen right-handed on the steeple grass at Caulfield last Friday when partnered by race rider Dan Nikolic. ''He said she felt terrific,'' Smerdon said.

Smerdon said that Mosheen will be floated to Sydney on Thursday and return to his Caulfield stables after Saturday's race.
